Analysts believe that Zomato’s Blinkit business, which was initially expected to be a major growth driver, now faces tough competition and will likely see slower growth than anticipated.

Zomato's stock took a significant hit on Tuesday, dropping 5% after Jefferies downgraded its rating from "Buy" to "Hold." The global investment firm also slashed its price target for the food delivery aggregator, lowering it from Rs 335 to Rs 275. This sharp revision comes amid growing concerns about the increasing competition in the quick commerce space, particularly from rivals such as Swiggy’s Instamart, Zepto, and Amazon, which are challenging Zomato's Blinkit segment.

Jefferies' decision to downgrade Zomato stems from the heightened competitive pressure in the last-mile delivery sector, where Swiggy's Instamart has gained significant traction. Additionally, the increasing scale of operations from Zepto, a rapid grocery delivery startup, and Amazon’s entry into the space are posing further challenges to Zomato’s market share. Analysts believe that Zomato’s Blinkit business, which was initially expected to be a major growth driver, now faces tough competition and will likely see slower growth than anticipated.

As a result of this downgrade, Zomato's stock opened at Rs 254.30 on Tuesday, down from its previous day’s closing price. The company's shares have now fallen 13% from their all-time high of Rs 304, which occurred earlier this year. The revised target price of Rs 275, while slightly above its current value, reflects a much more conservative outlook for the stock in the near term.

The downgrade highlights the growing concern among investors about Zomato’s ability to maintain its dominance in a rapidly changing competitive landscape. While the company has shown strong growth in food delivery, the quick commerce space is more fragmented, and new players with significant financial backing are intensifying the race. The company's challenges in its Blinkit business, coupled with the intense competition, have led analysts to reassess their optimistic outlook for Zomato.

In the context of these changes, Zomato's stock is expected to face further pressure in the short term, especially as the market digests the implications of these downgrades. Although Zomato still holds a dominant position in food delivery, its ability to sustain growth amid the rapid rise of quick-commerce competitors will be key to its future performance in the market. Investors will be closely watching how Zomato adapts to this new competitive reality and whether it can regain investor confidence in the coming quarters.
