Higher Education Curriculum in Tamil Nadu to See Reforms Soon: Minister K. S. S. Selvan

In an important announcement regarding reforms in Tamil Nadu’s higher education system, Minister for Higher Education, K. S. S. Selvan, confirmed that changes to the curriculum will be introduced in the near future. This was stated following a consultation meeting with various stakeholders in the higher education sector, held at the University of Chennai.

Minister Selvan addressed the media after the meeting, elaborating on the government’s decision to bring in reforms to ensure better alignment between education and employment. "In line with developed countries, we have decided to hold consultations regarding advancements in education. We had consultations in Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, and Madurai, and today marks the conclusion of the discussions in Chennai," he stated.

Addressing the Skills Gap:
Selvan highlighted the need to bridge the gap between education and employment, stating, “Our aim is for students to not be on the streets after finishing their studies, but to be employed.” He acknowledged that many employers have pointed out that graduates' skills are not matching job requirements.

To address this, the government plans to either introduce new courses or make changes to existing syllabi based on recommendations from experts. "We will make necessary changes to the curriculum, whether that involves adding new subjects or restructuring the existing ones," Selvan added.

Language Inclusivity:
At the meeting, a student from Coimbatore shared their experience, mentioning difficulties in understanding English medium subjects during the 'I am the Chief Minister' initiative. This concern has prompted the ministry to explore conducting classes in Tamil as well, ensuring that no student faces such challenges in the future.

Concerns Over Research Fees:
Minister Selvan also addressed concerns regarding the recent hike in fees for research students at the University of Chennai. "We are looking into this matter and will take decisions that do not negatively impact the students," he assured.

Chief Minister’s Research Fellowship Ceremony:
Earlier, at the Chief Minister's Research Fellowship award ceremony held at the University Education Directorate in Saidapet, Chennai, Minister Selvan presented cheques to 69 students as part of the fellowship. The awards also included a special recognition for Madiraja and Vigneshwari, who were awarded the Bharati Ilang Kavignar Award, each receiving a cash prize of ₹1 lakh.

Minister K. S. S. Selvan’s announcements reflect the government's commitment to modernizing the education system in Tamil Nadu and improving employability among graduates.
