The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board has revised its rules for WBJEE 2026 decentralised counselling after receiving concerns from students and other stakeholders. The board has decided to allow candidates who have already taken admission through the centralised online counselling process to participate in the common online decentralised counselling process as well.
The decision reverses an earlier provision that had prevented candidates who had already accepted seats through centralised counselling from taking part in the later decentralised admission process. WBJEEB said the change was made after considering requests received from various stakeholders.
The board has stated that the earlier decentralised counselling notification issued on August 27, 2026, will be modified to reflect the new decision. A revised counselling notification containing the necessary provisions will be published on the official WBJEEB website.
A revised counselling schedule is also being issued separately. According to the updated schedule, the frozen seat matrix is to be published on August 31. Candidate registration, payment of the registration fee and choice filling are scheduled from September 2 to September 4. The first phase of seat allotment is scheduled for September 6.
Candidates who receive a seat in the first phase will be required to pay the seat acceptance fee and report to the allotted institution for document verification and admission between September 6 and September 9. A second phase of registration and choice filling is scheduled from September 10 to September 12, followed by the second phase seat allotment result on September 13.
The revised rule is particularly important for students who have already secured admission but may now wish to improve their college, course or branch preference through vacant-seat counselling. Under the earlier restriction, such candidates would have been excluded from the decentralised process even if they had obtained a strong WBJEE or JEE Main rank.
The earlier provision attracted criticism from sections of the student and teaching communities. Concerns were raised that students who had already accepted seats could lose the opportunity to upgrade to a more preferred institution or academic programme if vacancies became available later.
