Australia Expands Biometric Requirements for Indian Visa Applicants

Indian students and other individuals planning to travel to Australia may have an additional requirement to complete when applying for a visa. The Australian Government has expanded its biometric collection programme to include visa applicants in India from October 26, 2026.

Under the new arrangement, individuals lodging a new Australian visa application in India on or after October 26 may be required to provide biometric information, including fingerprints and a facial image. The announcement was made by the Australian High Commission in New Delhi as part of the country's efforts to strengthen identity verification and maintain the security of its visa system.

The expanded requirements are relevant to Indian students planning to pursue higher education in Australia, as well as people applying for other eligible Australian visa categories. However, the requirement does not mean that every applicant will automatically have to submit biometric information. The Department of Home Affairs will inform individual applicants if they are required to complete this additional step.

Who Will Be Affected by the New Rule?

The biometric requirement applies to new Australian visa applications lodged in India on or after October 26, 2026.

Applications submitted before October 26 will not be affected by the expansion. Similarly, visas that have already been granted will remain unaffected.

The Department of Home Affairs, which manages Australia's immigration and visa processes, will notify applicants who need to provide biometric information. Instructions will generally be sent through email, either directly to the applicant or through their authorised migration agent.

Applicants should carefully check their official communications before arranging an appointment or attempting to submit biometric information.

What Biometric Information Must Applicants Provide?

Biometrics are personal identifiers used to help establish and verify an individual's identity. Under the expanded Australian requirements, applicants who receive a biometric request may be asked to provide:

  1. Fingerprints
  2. A facial image

The Australian Government says biometric information helps verify identities, protect legitimate applicants against identity misuse and reduce the risk of fraudulent visa applications.

The expansion brings India into a programme that Australia already operates in nearly 60 countries.

Where Can Applicants Submit Their Biometrics?

Depending on individual circumstances, applicants may be asked to complete the process through one of two methods.

1. Visit a Biometric Collection Centre

Applicants may be instructed to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) in person. There are 16 such centres across India, managed by VFS Global.

Applicants who receive an official instruction to attend a centre should follow the appointment and document requirements mentioned in their notification.

2. Use the Australian Immi App

Some eligible applicants may be able to complete the identity verification process digitally through the Australian Immi App.

According to the Australian Government, applicants who have previously provided their biometrics at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre and hold a valid passport may be eligible to use the app, depending on their individual circumstances.

The official app process requires applicants to follow the instructions in their biometric requirement letter. Eligibility and the method available will depend on the applicant's circumstances and the details provided by the Department of Home Affairs.

Will the New Rule Delay Australian Visa Processing?

The Australian High Commission has stated that the expanded biometric collection programme is not expected to adversely affect visa processing times, provided applicants complete the required steps promptly after receiving notification.

However, applicants who delay responding to a biometric request could face delays in completing their application process.

The government has therefore advised applicants to wait until they receive an official biometric requirement letter before booking an appointment or attempting to use the Australian Immi App.

Applicants should also follow only the instructions issued by the Department of Home Affairs and use official websites when arranging biometric collection.

What About Privacy and Personal Information?

The collection of fingerprints and facial images has also raised questions about how applicants' personal information will be handled.

The Australian Government has stated that biometric information will be collected, stored and managed in accordance with Australian legislation and applicable local laws.

The High Commission has also said that personal information will be securely processed and transmitted through encrypted channels, with safeguards intended to ensure lawful and secure handling.

It has further clarified that purchasing optional services offered by service providers will not influence visa processing times or the final outcome of an application.

What Indian Students Planning to Study in Australia Should Do

Indian students intending to pursue higher education in Australia should be aware of the revised requirements before submitting their visa applications.

Applicants should monitor emails and official communications from the Department of Home Affairs after lodging their applications. If a biometric requirement letter is received, they should follow the instructions promptly and check whether they are eligible to use the Australian Immi App or need to attend a collection centre.

The change introduces an additional identity-verification step for applicants who are specifically asked to provide biometrics. Students and other visa applicants should therefore plan their application process accordingly and avoid relying on unofficial information or third-party claims about biometric appointments.

The Australian Government says the expansion is intended to strengthen the reliability and security of its immigration system while supporting the growing movement of people between India and Australia.

The government has therefore advised applicants to wait until they receive an official biometric requirement letter before booking an appointment or attempting to use the Australian Immi App.
