Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the state government and the governor do not have the authority to remove the MPSC chairman because the position is a constitutional post.

The protest by Maharashtra Public Service Commission aspirants in Pune has intensified, with students continuing to press for greater transparency, fairness and accountability in the state’s competitive recruitment examination system. The agitation has attracted political support, with Shiv Sena UBT leader Sanjay Raut and CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke visiting the protesters and publicly backing their demand for action against the commission’s leadership.

The latest phase of the agitation began amid concerns raised by aspirants over the functioning of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission and alleged irregularities associated with recruitment examinations. Students have also raised concerns about recruitment delays and sought reforms that they believe could make the examination process more transparent and reliable.

On Sunday, Sanjay Raut met the protesting aspirants in Pune and extended his support to their demands. He criticised the state government’s handling of the issue and argued that the concerns raised by the students should be addressed through direct discussions. Raut also demanded the removal of the MPSC chairman and urged the government to take the students’ grievances seriously.

Abhijeet Dipke also joined the agitation and expressed support for the protesting students. His participation added to the political attention surrounding the demonstrations. The protests have become an important issue in Maharashtra as aspirants continue to seek changes in the way competitive examinations are conducted.

The central demand of the protesting students includes action concerning MPSC chairman Vivek Bhimanwar. However, the issue surrounding the chairman’s removal has a constitutional dimension. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that the state government and the governor do not have the authority to remove the MPSC chairman because the position is a constitutional post. According to the chief minister, the removal process involves the President of India acting on the recommendation of the Supreme Court.

The Maharashtra government has nevertheless taken action on another demand raised by the protesters. MPSC Secretary Mahendra Harpalkar was transferred on October 1 following discussions between student representatives and the state government. Protesters had demanded action against both the secretary and chairman over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.

The government has also announced plans for a large scale recruitment drive over the next three years. The proposed recruitment programme is expected to take into account vacancies created through retirements and other staffing requirements. The government has indicated that a department wise recruitment schedule would be prepared to improve the recruitment process.

Another important issue discussed during the agitation is the method of conducting MPSC examinations. The government has indicated that examinations will be conducted offline and that student groups will be consulted before decisions concerning the examination process are finalised. These steps are aimed at addressing concerns raised by aspirants about the recruitment system.

The protest has also seen differences among student groups regarding the examination pattern. According to reports, separate groups have been demonstrating at different locations in Pune, with some students supporting the existing objective examination format while another group has demanded a descriptive examination system. The divisions have added another dimension to the ongoing agitation.

The demonstrations have taken place at multiple locations, including the area around SM Joshi Bridge, Shastri Road and Alka Talkies Tilak Chowk. Political representatives from different parties have visited the protest sites and expressed support for various demands raised by the aspirants.

The agitation has also received support from other opposition leaders. NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar recently urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to hold discussions with the protesting students and work towards resolving the deadlock. Pawar said that dialogue between the government and the aspirants was necessary to address the concerns and bring the agitation to an end.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also expressed support for the protesting aspirants and said that their demands required action rather than assurances. His intervention has added further political attention to the issue.

The continuing agitation highlights the importance of transparency and confidence in public recruitment examinations. MPSC examinations are a major pathway for candidates seeking positions in Maharashtra’s state administration and other government services. Any concerns regarding examination procedures, recruitment delays or alleged irregularities can therefore have a significant impact on thousands of aspirants preparing for government careers.

For the protesting students, the immediate focus remains on accountability, examination reforms and a decision regarding the commission’s leadership. For the government, the challenge is to address these concerns while following the constitutional procedures applicable to the MPSC.

The situation remains fluid as discussions between student representatives, political leaders and the state government continue. Further developments are expected to depend on whether the government and protesting aspirants can reach common ground on examination reforms, recruitment timelines and the students’ demand concerning the MPSC chairman.
