NCERT has said that the programme aims to strengthen teachers' understanding of the nature and role of science and help them understand how children learn scientific concepts.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training has launched a 40 week online diploma course designed to strengthen the teaching skills and subject knowledge of teachers handling science at the middle school level.

The programme is titled Diploma Course in Teaching of Science at Middle Stage and is primarily intended for teachers working with students in Classes 6 to 8. NCERT has developed the course through its Department of Education in Science and Mathematics with the objective of supporting professional development and improving science teaching practices.

According to the current NCERTX course information, registration for the 2026 27 batch will begin on October 12, 2026, and remain open until November 12, 2026. The online programme will begin on November 16, 2026, and is scheduled to continue for 40 weeks until August 31, 2027. The enrollment fee is Rs 2,000, payable online.

The course will be conducted completely online through the NCERTX platform. It is designed to provide teachers with flexible access to learning materials and professional development resources while allowing them to continue their regular teaching responsibilities.

NCERTX states that participants should expect to spend approximately 6 to 8 hours each week on the programme. The course consists of 40 modules, with each module generally opened on a Monday and intended to be completed during the following week. The modules and final examination together form the 40 week programme.

The course focuses not only on science content but also on how science should be taught to middle school students. NCERT has said that the programme aims to strengthen teachers' understanding of the nature and role of science and help them understand how children learn scientific concepts.

The programme also focuses on improving pedagogical skills. Teachers will be introduced to approaches that can help them prepare lesson plans, use appropriate learning resources and multimedia materials, encourage classroom discussions and develop inquiry based learning activities.

According to NCERT, one of the key objectives is to encourage scientific temper among students. This includes developing objectivity, critical thinking, curiosity, creativity and an understanding of scientific methods and processes. The course is intended to help teachers create learning environments where students can ask questions, explore concepts and develop their own understanding of scientific ideas.

The curriculum consists of 40 modules covering different aspects of science education and science content. The opening modules deal with fundamental questions about science, how scientific knowledge is developed, how children learn and how teachers can engage students through active learning.

Other modules focus on teaching and learning strategies and assessment in science. The programme then moves into areas of physical science, chemistry, biology, environmental science and related topics.

The science content includes subjects such as physical and chemical changes, acids and bases, metals and non metals, combustion and oxidation, atoms and molecules, motion, force, fluid pressure, density, energy, heat and temperature.

The curriculum also covers light, electricity, magnetism, sound, the particle nature of matter and elementary astronomy. Biology related modules include living and non living systems, microorganisms, cells, photosynthesis, digestion, respiration, transportation in plants, circulation and excretion. The later modules address topics such as the skeletal system, plant life cycles, reproduction, ecosystems, biodiversity and human interaction with nature.

The course is therefore structured to combine subject knowledge with teaching methodology. This approach is intended to help teachers develop stronger conceptual understanding while also learning how to communicate scientific ideas effectively to students.

The programme is primarily aimed at teachers who teach science at the middle stage, covering Classes 6 to 8. NCERTX describes it as a professional development opportunity for both pre service and in service teachers involved in science education.

NCERT also states that the course can help teachers who have limited access to conventional professional development programmes. Since the programme is delivered online, teachers from different parts of the country can participate without having to travel to a training centre.

Another focus of the course is helping teachers become reflective and competent practitioners. Rather than relying only on textbook based instruction, the programme encourages teachers to consider how students develop scientific understanding and how classroom activities can promote questioning, observation and reasoning.

The course also provides guidance on the role of teachers as facilitators. NCERT's course objectives include encouraging teachers to ask questions, promote exploration, guide group activities and help students analyse their observations before reaching conclusions.

Assessment will form an important part of the programme. The NCERTX course structure provides for assessments associated with the modules as well as a final examination. Participants are expected to complete the required modules and assessments as part of the 40 week programme.

On successful completion, NCERT awards an e certificate for Teaching of Science at Middle Stage. NCERT also makes it clear that the course is an academic professional development programme and should not be treated as equivalent to a qualification required for appointment as a teacher.

The Rs 2,000 enrollment fee is a one time payment, according to the NCERTX information. The platform states that there is no additional course fee and that payment is made online.

The launch of the new batch comes as teacher professional development continues to receive attention in school education. Strengthening teachers' subject knowledge and classroom practices is particularly important in science education, where students are expected to develop conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning rather than simply memorise information.

The online format also provides flexibility for working teachers. Since participants are expected to devote around 6 to 8 hours per week, the course can be completed alongside regular teaching responsibilities. The weekly module structure provides a defined learning schedule while allowing teachers to access the materials online.

Teachers interested in the programme should carefully check the eligibility conditions, registration instructions and latest schedule on the official NCERTX platform before applying. The current course page lists the 2026 27 batch as an upcoming programme and indicates that enrollment will begin soon.

Registration is scheduled to open on October 12, 2026, giving eligible candidates a window to complete the enrollment process before the November 12 deadline. The course itself is scheduled to begin on November 16.

Overall, the NCERT online diploma programme provides a structured professional development opportunity for teachers working with science students in Classes 6 to 8. Its combination of science content, teaching methodology, assessment practices and inquiry based learning is intended to help teachers improve classroom instruction.

The 40 week duration allows participants to progress through the modules in stages rather than completing the programme in a short intensive period. With an estimated weekly commitment of 6 to 8 hours, the programme is structured to accommodate teachers who are already working in schools.

The programme is also designed to make professional learning more accessible through its online format. Teachers across India can participate through NCERTX, subject to the stated enrollment requirements. Successful participants will receive an NCERT e certificate after completing the prescribed academic requirements and final assessment.

Teachers will be introduced to approaches that can help them prepare lesson plans, use appropriate learning resources and multimedia materials, encourage classroom discussions and develop inquiry based learning activities.
