The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has outlined a series of recruitment reforms aimed at improving the efficiency, accessibility, and transparency of its examination and selection process. According to information released by the Commission, a total of 78,394 appointments have been made through UPSC recruitment processes since 2014.
The Commission stated that it has implemented several technology-driven initiatives to simplify the recruitment process for candidates across the country. These measures are intended to make applications more convenient while reducing administrative delays and improving the overall candidate experience.
One of the major reforms highlighted by UPSC is the introduction of the One-Time Registration (OTR) portal. The OTR system allows candidates to create a single registration profile that can be used for multiple UPSC examinations and recruitment notifications. Instead of entering personal information repeatedly for every application, registered candidates can reuse their verified profile details when applying for different examinations.
The Commission has also integrated the OTR portal with Aadhaar and DigiLocker to facilitate secure identity verification and digital document management. Through this integration, candidates can authenticate their identity and access eligible digital documents electronically, helping reduce paperwork and improve the accuracy of submitted information.
UPSC further highlighted measures introduced to improve accessibility for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). According to the Commission, examination centres have been made more accessible through infrastructure improvements and enhanced support services. These initiatives are intended to ensure that eligible candidates with disabilities can participate in examinations under fair and inclusive conditions.
The Commission noted that technology has played a central role in modernizing recruitment procedures. Digital application systems, online communication, electronic document verification, and improved examination management have helped streamline various stages of the recruitment process while enhancing transparency.
UPSC conducts some of India's most prestigious competitive examinations, including the Civil Services Examination, Engineering Services Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination, National Defence Academy Examination, Combined Medical Services Examination, Indian Forest Service Examination, and several recruitment tests for various central government departments and organizations.
Every year, lakhs of candidates apply for UPSC examinations seeking careers in the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Foreign Service, and other Group A and Group B services under the Government of India. Given the scale of these examinations, efficient recruitment systems and digital processes play an important role in managing applications and maintaining examination integrity.
The One-Time Registration portal has been welcomed by many candidates because it reduces the need to repeatedly enter identical personal details for different examinations. The system also helps minimize data entry errors and speeds up the application process, particularly for candidates applying to multiple UPSC notifications.
