Mahadev Betting App Case: Rs 200 Crore Dubai Wedding Brings Celebrities Under ED Scrutiny
The Mahadev online betting app case has returned to national attention following the extradition of alleged key promoter Sourabh Chandrakar from Oman to India. The Enforcement Directorate's investigation into the alleged betting syndicate has brought renewed focus to Chandrakar's extravagant Dubai wedding in February 2023, which the agency estimated cost approximately Rs 200 crore.
The wedding reportedly featured private aircraft, luxury hotel arrangements, celebrity appearances and elaborate event management. Investigators have alleged that a substantial portion of the expenditure was made through hawala channels using money linked to illegal online betting operations.
The case has also attracted attention because several Bollywood and television personalities were reportedly summoned by the Enforcement Directorate for questioning about events associated with the Mahadev betting network. However, being summoned for questioning does not establish that a person was involved in money laundering or any other criminal activity.
Sourabh Chandrakar's Dubai Wedding Under Investigation
Sourabh Chandrakar's wedding took place in February 2023 at Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. According to the Enforcement Directorate, approximately Rs 200 crore was spent on the celebrations.
The agency alleged that private aircraft were arranged to transport family members from Nagpur to the UAE. Event organisers, wedding planners, dancers and decorators were reportedly brought in from Mumbai for the celebrations.
The wedding attracted attention because of its scale and the reported involvement of entertainment industry personalities. The ED began examining the financial arrangements after identifying transactions allegedly connected to the Mahadev betting operation.
According to the agency's September 2023 statement, approximately Rs 112 crore was allegedly delivered through hawala channels to an event management company associated with the wedding. Hotel bookings worth around Rs 42 crore were also allegedly paid for in cash in UAE currency.
The ED said it had collected digital evidence and financial records relating to the transactions. These findings became an important part of its investigation into the alleged movement of betting proceeds.
Celebrities Summoned by the Enforcement Directorate
The case attracted considerable attention after reports emerged that several celebrities from Bollywood, television and the South Indian entertainment industry had been identified during the investigation.
In October 2023, reports based on ED sources stated that actor Ranbir Kapoor had been summoned for questioning. Comedian Kapil Sharma, actors Huma Qureshi and Hina Khan were also among the personalities reportedly issued summons.
According to reports, investigators wanted to question celebrities about their participation in events organised by the Mahadev network and their alleged promotional associations with betting-related platforms.
The agency was also examining whether payments made to certain personalities were connected to the proceeds of illegal betting operations. Investigators reportedly planned to verify payment records, travel arrangements and other financial details.
It is important to distinguish between being invited to an event, performing at a function, endorsing a platform and receiving money through an alleged illegal financial network. These are separate matters that require individual investigation.
A summons from the ED is a request to appear and provide information. It does not automatically mean that the person has been charged with an offence or found guilty of wrongdoing.
How the Alleged Rs 200 Crore Wedding Payments Were Made
The financial arrangements surrounding the wedding became a major focus of the ED investigation.
The agency alleged that Rs 112 crore was transferred through hawala channels to an event management company linked to the wedding arrangements. It also identified hotel bookings worth approximately Rs 42 crore that were allegedly paid for in cash.
Hawala is an informal system of transferring money through networks of intermediaries, often without the conventional banking channels used in international transactions. Investigators in the Mahadev case have alleged that such channels were used to move money generated through illegal online betting activities.
The ED also examined the role of travel companies that reportedly arranged flights and accommodation for guests, organisers and entertainment personalities.
According to the agency, these arrangements formed part of a larger financial network used to move and spend the alleged proceeds of betting operations.
The investigation involved examining digital records, financial transactions, event management contracts and travel-related information to identify the source and movement of the money.
What Is the Mahadev Online Betting App Case?
The Mahadev Online Book platform is at the centre of an investigation into an alleged large-scale illegal online betting syndicate.
According to the ED, Sourabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal were among the main promoters of the operation. The agency alleged that the network was controlled from Dubai and operated through a franchise-based system involving betting panels and local associates.
Investigators said these panels were used to register customers, create betting IDs and collect money from users. The network allegedly operated through several associated platforms and websites.
The ED also alleged that money generated through betting was routed through multiple bank accounts and financial intermediaries before being transferred abroad.
The investigation has expanded beyond the wedding expenditure to include alleged money laundering, financial transactions, properties and possible payments to public officials.
In its March 2026 action, the ED announced the provisional attachment of 20 immovable properties in Dubai and New Delhi with a reported fair market value of nearly Rs 1,700 crore. The agency alleged that these properties were acquired using proceeds generated through illegal betting operations.
These are investigative allegations and attachment proceedings. They should not be treated as final judicial findings.
Chandrakar Extradited from Oman to India
The case gained fresh momentum after Sourabh Chandrakar was extradited from Oman to India on November 1, 2026.
Indian central agencies had been seeking his return in connection with the investigation. According to reports, he was detained in Muscat following an Interpol Red Notice before being brought to India by a special Central Bureau of Investigation team.
Chandrakar faces proceedings in two CBI cases, while the Enforcement Directorate has also filed a prosecution complaint against him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
His return is considered significant because investigators can now pursue further questioning and legal proceedings in India.
The agencies are expected to examine the alleged betting network, financial transactions, properties and the role of other individuals connected to the operation.
The investigation also involves Ravi Uppal, identified as another key promoter of the alleged betting syndicate. Authorities have continued efforts to trace other accused individuals and investigate the financial network.
Investigation Continues into the Alleged Money Trail
The Mahadev case has developed into a wider investigation involving online betting, alleged money laundering, hawala transactions and financial assets in India and abroad.
The ED has examined the reported wedding expenditure as one part of the alleged financial network. The agency has also investigated the role of event organisers, travel companies, financial intermediaries and individuals associated with the betting platforms.
The celebrity angle has attracted public attention because of the involvement of well-known entertainment personalities in events associated with the network. However, the investigation must establish the nature of each person's involvement through evidence and legal procedures.
With Chandrakar now back in India, investigators have another opportunity to examine the alleged operations and financial arrangements. The case is expected to remain under scrutiny as the agencies continue tracing transactions and pursuing legal proceedings.
The reported Rs 200 crore Dubai wedding remains one of the most high-profile aspects of the investigation. Whether the alleged payments can be directly linked to proceeds from illegal betting will ultimately depend on the evidence presented during the legal process.
