In a significant move to address recurring flood issues in Chennai's southern zones, a ₹696 crore project has been launched to construct 141 kilometers of stormwater drains in Perungudi and Sholinganallur. This initiative is part of the third phase of the Kovalam Integrated Drain Plan, with completion targeted by 2026.
The project aims to mitigate flood risks in areas frequently affected by waterlogging during the monsoon season. The construction will provide a long-term solution to manage rainwater effectively and prevent inundation in residential, commercial, and industrial zones.
Chennai's urban areas often face severe waterlogging due to insufficient drainage infrastructure. This project will improve stormwater management by channeling rainwater into designated drainage systems, reducing flood risks significantly. It will also facilitate the storage and redirection of rainwater to nearby lakes and reservoirs, contributing to groundwater recharge.
The stormwater drain project is expected to yield multiple benefits:
- Flood Prevention: Ensuring the safety of residential and industrial areas.
- Water Conservation: Storing rainwater for sustainable use.
- Infrastructure Resilience: Strengthening Chennai's urban framework against future monsoons.
Residents and businesses in flood-prone areas have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the project will provide a permanent solution to the challenges they face during heavy rains. The Chennai Corporation has committed to regular monitoring and timely execution of the work, emphasizing transparency and efficiency.
Officials also highlight that the project aligns with broader urban development goals, ensuring sustainable growth while addressing critical infrastructure challenges. Upon completion, the project will set a benchmark for other cities facing similar flood-related issues.
