On Tuesday night, 41 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who were recently released from Sri Lankan custody, arrived home safely. The fishermen, primarily from Pamban and Akka Madam in Ramanathapuram district, landed at Chennai airport on an Air India flight from Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Upon their arrival, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department officials warmly received them and arranged for their transportation to their respective villages in vehicles organized by the state government. The fishermen endured months of imprisonment in Sri Lanka after being detained for alleged fishing violations in international waters.
Of the 41 fishermen, 35 were from Pamban and were apprehended by the Sri Lankan coast guard on August 9 while fishing in three mechanised boats. Their boats were seized, and they were imprisoned following a court order. The remaining six fishermen, from Akka Madam, were detained under similar circumstances on December 8.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin intervened promptly, writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging immediate diplomatic action. Indian embassy officials in Sri Lanka engaged in continuous negotiations with the Sri Lankan government, which ultimately led to the fishermen’s release.
A Sri Lankan court recently ordered the release of the 41 fishermen, who were handed over to Indian embassy officials. Since they lacked passports, the embassy issued emergency certificates to facilitate their travel. Additionally, flight tickets were arranged by the embassy to ensure their safe return.
The fishermen arrived in Chennai on Tuesday night, bringing an end to their challenging ordeal. The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department, with support from the state government, ensured the fishermen’s reunion with their families by organizing their onward travel to their hometowns. The successful release underscores the importance of diplomatic intervention in safeguarding the interests of Indian fishermen.
