Air India Express Flight From Kuwait to Chennai Strands Passengers’ Luggage Due to Weight Restrictions

Upset passengers confronted the airline's ground staff, who explained that certain luggage had been withheld in Kuwait to ensure the flight adhered to its air haul weight limitations.

In an unusual incident on Monday, passengers aboard an Air India Express flight from Kuwait to Chennai were left without their check-in luggage upon arrival. The A320 flight, carrying 176 passengers, landed in Chennai around 6:30 am, but when passengers reached the baggage claim area, they were unable to find their luggage on the conveyor belt.

Upset passengers confronted the airline's ground staff, who explained that certain luggage had been withheld in Kuwait to ensure the flight adhered to its air haul weight limitations. The airline reassured the passengers that the remaining luggage would be delivered to their homes in Chennai within a couple of days, specifically on Wednesday and Thursday.

An Air India Express spokesperson confirmed the situation, saying, "Due to payload restrictions, some checked-in baggage could not be uplifted on one of the flights operating on the Kuwait–Chennai sector. We regret the inconvenience caused and have made arrangements to deliver the impacted baggage to the residences of the concerned guests at the earliest, at the airline’s expense."

However, aviation expert and retired Air India official C Mohan criticized the airline for the oversight. He explained that aircrafts cannot always accommodate the full passenger load due to regulated take-off weight (RTOW) limits, and it is the airport manager's responsibility to ensure the weight is balanced. Mohan emphasized that separating passengers from their luggage is not permitted in aviation, as it leads to unnecessary inconvenience and logistical challenges for both passengers and airlines.

The incident highlights a significant issue regarding weight management and customer service in the airline industry, raising concerns over the impact such occurrences have on passenger experience and airline operations.
