In a significant and solemn ceremony, Reverend Dr. Paul Francis was consecrated and installed as the 14th Bishop of the Church of South India (CSI) Diocese of Madras. The installation service took place at the CSI St. George’s Cathedral in Chennai, a historic church known for its architectural beauty and spiritual heritage.
The consecration service was attended by several prominent leaders from the Church of South India, including bishops from various dioceses, senior clergy members, and a large number of laypersons from across Tamil Nadu. The service followed traditional liturgical practices, beginning with a special prayer, hymns, and the formal handing over of responsibilities to the new bishop.
Bishop Paul Francis succeeds Bishop J. George Stephen and brings with him years of pastoral experience, leadership in ministry, and a strong commitment to community development and education. Known for his approachable nature and theological depth, Bishop Francis has served in various capacities within the church before being elected to this highest office in the diocese.
In his inaugural message, Bishop Paul Francis expressed gratitude to the clergy, lay leaders, and members of the CSI community for their support and prayers. He emphasized the importance of compassion, service, and inclusivity as guiding principles of his leadership. He also highlighted his vision for empowering youth, strengthening education in church-run institutions, and expanding social outreach programs for the underprivileged.
The Church of South India, formed in 1947, is one of the largest Protestant denominations in the country and plays a vital role in spiritual life and social service in Tamil Nadu. The Madras Diocese, in particular, oversees numerous churches, schools, colleges, and community development centers in and around Chennai.
As Bishop Paul Francis takes on this new role, expectations are high among the faithful for a spiritually enriching and socially responsive leadership. Many church members who attended the service expressed hope that the bishop’s inclusive vision will bring renewed energy and unity to the diocese.
Special prayers were offered for wisdom, strength, and divine guidance as Bishop Francis begins his term. Choir groups from various congregations performed hymns, and young members of the church participated in the service through readings and intercessory prayers.
The event concluded with a formal blessing, followed by a fellowship gathering within the church premises, where members congratulated the bishop and extended their warm wishes.
With a focus on faith, service, and transformation, Bishop Paul Francis’s leadership is set to guide the CSI Diocese of Madras into a new era of growth and ministry, continuing the church’s mission of love, justice, and community care in Chennai and beyond.
