As part of efforts to ensure a safe and peaceful New Year celebration in Chennai, the police have enforced a ban on firecrackers and implemented comprehensive security arrangements across the city. The decision comes as part of measures to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the safety of citizens. The Chennai Police Department has rolled out an extensive security plan for the New Year’s Eve, which includes setting up 425 vehicle check posts at crucial points across 12 police districts. These districts encompass high-traffic areas such as Thiruvallikkeni, Mylapore, T. Nagar, Adyar, Vannarapettai, and Coimbatore, where crowds tend to gather in large numbers.
In addition to the vehicle checks, the police have also formed 30 dedicated surveillance teams to monitor and prevent illegal activities like bike racing, which has been a concern in previous years. The police are taking a proactive approach to keep such activities in check and to prevent any accidents.
On the coastal front, strict restrictions have been placed on people visiting popular beaches like Marina, Elliots, and Neelankarai. As part of safety measures, the public is strictly prohibited from entering the sea or swimming during the celebrations. This move is aimed at ensuring that there are no water-related accidents, especially when the crowds are high during the festivities.
The Chennai Police have also issued guidelines for public events. Any celebrations or gatherings in residential complexes and apartment buildings are required to obtain prior permission from the police department. Similarly, the use of loudspeakers or other amplification devices is allowed only with the express consent of the relevant authorities. This measure aims to prevent any disturbances to the peace in residential areas during the late hours of the night.
To ensure smooth implementation of these security measures, a total of 19,000 police personnel will be deployed across the city. These officers will be responsible for crowd control, traffic management, and maintaining law and order. Additionally, the police will be working closely with other departments to monitor the situation and respond quickly to any emergencies.
The police have emphasized that the goal is to celebrate the New Year in a manner that is safe, peaceful, and enjoyable for all residents of Chennai. By following these guidelines and cooperating with the authorities, the public can help ensure that the celebrations are free from any incidents. With these stringent security arrangements in place, Chennaiites are expected to usher in 2025 with joy and safety, making sure that the festivities are enjoyed by everyone in a secure environment.
