The Pillaiyakaleswarar Temple, a historic thousand-year-old temple located in Pennadam, Kadalur district, is gearing up for its Kumbhabhishekam on February 10. In preparation for this much-awaited event, the Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department has accelerated restoration works. The temple, which has a rich history and significance, underwent renovation in 2006, and the Kumbhabhishekam was conducted. However, with the completion of 12 years since that event, the temple administration has once again sought the involvement of the Archaeology Department for further renovation and restoration.
The temple’s surroundings, including the Pralayakaleswarar deity’s sanctum and the adjoining walls, have been under careful examination. Archaeologists have identified areas where the ancient stone inscriptions, sculptures, and pillars require attention. It was also found that the lack of proper maintenance led to the deterioration of certain structural elements, particularly the tower, which was at risk of collapsing due to the growth of weeds, shrubs, and other natural elements.
The restoration work is crucial to preserve the temple's architectural beauty and protect it for future generations. The temple authorities are hopeful that the upcoming Kumbhabhishekam will be a grand event, with the restoration being completed in time to host the religious ceremony. This event will not only mark the spiritual significance of the temple but also serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving ancient cultural heritage for the community.
