A serious complaint has been raised by students at Dindigul Gandhi Gram University against Professor Ranganathan, a faculty member responsible for training health researchers. The students have accused the professor of promoting the study of Sanskrit, a move which they believe is inappropriate in the context of modern education. Additionally, the professor allegedly made disparaging comments about Dravidian culture, which offended many students.
The allegations extend beyond academic matters, with students claiming that Ranganathan used his position to promote political views. He reportedly engaged in campaigning in support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by speaking to students about the party's ideologies. Moreover, he is said to have created a WhatsApp group, adding students without their consent, and shared posts supporting the BJP.
These actions prompted the students to file an official complaint against the professor. In response, the university's vice chancellor ordered an investigation into the matter. The inquiry found that the allegations were indeed true, and as a result, the vice chancellor decided to take disciplinary action. Professor Ranganathan was directed to take voluntary retirement for a period of six months, effectively removing him from his position for the time being.
This incident has sparked a debate about the role of educators in political activities and their influence on students, especially in a university setting. While some students feel that the professor overstepped his boundaries, others are concerned about the potential political influence in academic spaces. The university has taken this matter seriously and is likely to review its policies to prevent such incidents in the future.
