Call for Implementation of Underground Sewage System in Thiyagathurugam to Address Lake Pollution

This is primarily due to the inadequate drainage systems, as the streets in the town are narrow and the sewage drains are not wide enough to function effectively.

The Thiyagathurugam Panchayat area has been facing water pollution issues as wastewater from the region flows into the Upper Pondi Thakka and Pukkulam lakes, resulting in contamination. This is primarily due to the inadequate drainage systems, as the streets in the town are narrow and the sewage drains are not wide enough to function effectively. The wastewater from a large part of the town, especially near the bus station, flows into the Upper Pondi Thakka Lake, causing severe water contamination, foul odors, and becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can lead to the spread of infectious diseases.

This situation is causing additional problems. The wastewater from another part of the town is also contaminating the Pukkulam Lake, further spreading pollution and foul air, affecting the surrounding population and lands. Irrigated lands in the Ayakattu area are also affected, as they rely on water from these lakes for farming, thereby harming agricultural production.

Furthermore, the Upper Pondi Thakka Lake, where wastewater has accumulated, is now covered by weeds and water lilies, creating a visual of a swamp-like forest. As a result, the lake is severely polluted, and the environmental damage continues to grow.

Due to the narrowness of the streets, sewage drains cannot be widened, which means that wastewater is not able to flow out easily. The open sewage drains are also clogged with garbage, causing wastewater to accumulate and emit foul odors.

The most effective solution to address this issue is the implementation of an underground sewage system (subsurface drainage) in Thiyagathurugam. A project estimate should be created, and the necessary funds should be procured from the government to implement this plan quickly.

To ensure the cleanliness of Thiyagathurugam city, it is vital to establish a system that safely drains treated wastewater. This will not only protect the environment but also improve the living conditions of residents and safeguard public health.
