Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (DTICo) has informed that the airport project will proceed once approval is granted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

A new airport is being planned to be set up at the old airbase near Ulundurpet, which covers 35 acres. Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (DTICo) has informed that the airport project will proceed once approval is granted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The proposed airport is estimated to cover an area of 80 acres, and DTICo plans to acquire 48 acres of land from private owners to complete the 83-acre airport project. The feasibility report for the new airport has recently been finalized by DTICo.

Once established, this airport will provide easier access to several major towns, including Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Neyveli, Virudhachalam, Thirukovilur, and Thiruvannamalai. Additionally, the nearby Asanur Industrial Estate will benefit from this development, which is expected to promote industrial growth in the region.

Once operational, the airport will also be able to accommodate flight routes similar to those used during the inaugural flight of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation’s launch, which was attended by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Local citizens and industry stakeholders have urged the Tamil Nadu government to prioritize this project, as it is seen as crucial for regional connectivity. The state and central governments are taking necessary steps for the development of several airports across Tamil Nadu, aimed at improving accessibility and boosting air travel services.

With better accessibility, it is expected that air traffic will increase, benefiting both passengers and the economy.
