Kallakurichi: Farmers' Grievance Meeting Highlights Key Issues
A meeting was held yesterday at the Kallakurichi Collectorate to address the grievances of farmers in the district. The event, chaired by District Collector Prashanth, brought together a large number of farmers and representatives from various agricultural organizations to discuss several pressing issues.
The meeting saw discussions on the damages caused to crops due to the recent cyclone, with a demand for detailed reports on crop loss and the disbursement of relief funds. Farmers also requested immediate compensation for those whose land has been affected by the installation of high-tension power lines.
One of the key demands raised during the meeting was the establishment of a SECO factory to prevent fluctuations in the price of maravalli crops, which are being procured by out-of-district companies. The need for timely payment for sugarcane under the Tarani Sugar Mill scheme was also discussed, with farmers seeking the settlement of outstanding dues.
Additionally, concerns were raised over the destruction of crops by wild animals, particularly wild boars, in forest areas. Farmers urged the authorities to take immediate action to control the menace. A request was also made for the provision of crop insurance payouts for crops damaged due to the recent storms and heavy rains.
The meeting also highlighted issues regarding irrigation facilities, with farmers requesting improvements in water supply to lakes and canals to ensure adequate water availability for crops. The construction of protective barriers along rivers like the Pallakkadu Komuki River was another crucial demand discussed.
Farmers requested the establishment of seed testing labs in the district, the repair of rural roads, and better facilities for market transactions. The Collector assured the farmers that all their concerns would be addressed in a timely manner, and appropriate actions would be taken to resolve the issues raised.
Key officials present at the meeting included District Revenue Officer Sathyanarayana, Deputy Director of Agriculture Anbalagan, Assistant Director of Horticulture Sivakumar, District Manager of Consumer Affairs Nandakumar, and several other district officials.
