In Kallakkurichi district, the Manimuktha Dam, located near the town of Soolangurichchi, has become a source of controversy due to illegal gravel and sand extraction activities. The dam, which has a capacity of 736.96 million cubic feet and stands 36 feet high, serves as a crucial water resource for irrigation and drinking purposes. Water from the dam is primarily used to irrigate agricultural fields across 5,493 acres of land and provides essential drinking water to nearby villages.
The issue gained attention after the dam reached its full capacity following rains from Cyclone Banjal in early December. As water overflowed through the dam's spillway, officials began releasing water for irrigation purposes. However, it was noticed that gravel was being illegally extracted from the dam’s banks, primarily during daylight hours, using large machines like backhoes and dump trucks. The theft, which takes place from 6 AM to 5 PM daily, is reportedly being conducted without any official approval.
Local farmers and residents have raised alarm over the unlawful extraction, claiming that the gravel is being sold in the open market instead of being used for agricultural or government purposes. Despite these complaints, the authorities have not intervened, and the illegal activities have continued for over 20 days. Though there have been instances where temporary permits were granted for gravel extraction, the guidelines for extraction are not being followed, and significant damage to the environment has been observed.
The situation has led to the creation of large pits and depressions along the dam's banks, which is raising concerns among local communities. In addition, the unauthorized extraction is affecting the quality of water stored in the dam, which is crucial for local farming and drinking water needs.
Frustration is mounting as local representatives and government officials have largely remained silent on the issue, leaving the public to feel neglected. The villagers and farmers have now called on the authorities to take immediate action to prevent further illegal extraction of gravel and to restore order in the area. The situation has sparked a call for urgent intervention to protect both the environment and the livelihoods of those dependent on the dam’s resources.
