The Vaanapuram Government Primary Health Center, which caters to around 200 patients daily, is experiencing significant challenges due to a shortage of medical staff. Located in a region encompassing over 30 villages, the center has 5 beds for general patients and 10 beds for maternity care. However, there is currently only one doctor available, and the position for a second doctor has remained vacant for over four years.
This shortage has severely impacted the center’s ability to provide adequate care, especially during night shifts. Due to the lack of available doctors, patients with injuries from accidents, as well as pregnant women experiencing labor pains, are often forced to seek treatment at other hospitals like the government medical centers in Sankarapuram or Kallakurichi. This situation has created ongoing frustration among local residents, especially since night-time emergencies, particularly for maternity cases, are frequent.
Additionally, the center is operating with insufficient staff. Although there are 5 nurses, the overall team comprises just 11 people, which is inadequate for the increasing number of patients. Residents have expressed concerns over the outdated and dilapidated condition of the doctor and nurse quarters as well, which has contributed to a decline in staff morale.
Local citizens have made several appeals to the government, highlighting the urgent need to fill the vacant doctor position and to improve the center’s infrastructure. The Vaanapuram Government Primary Health Center must be upgraded to a taluk hospital, they argue, with additional facilities like extra beds, a blood bank, and even alternative medicine departments like Siddha.
This issue has been raised before by the public, with Subramanian, the Minister for Public Welfare, visiting the facility twice for inspections. Despite these visits, there has been no significant improvement.
With the rising population and growing demand for healthcare services, it is imperative that the authorities act quickly to resolve staffing shortages and improve the healthcare facilities to provide better care for the local community.
