A mild earthquake shook Kallakkurichi district on the morning of January 2, 2025, at 9:16 AM, causing widespread panic among the residents of several localities. The tremors were felt in areas like Sangarapuram, Kaschirayapalayam, Nedumanoor, Sheshachamuthiram, Poigunam, and Javalikuppam, leaving people alarmed and rushing to evacuate their homes and shops. The tremors lasted for approximately 2-3 seconds, but the sudden nature of the event led to significant anxiety in the community.

Despite the initial panic, no substantial damage to property or injuries to people have been reported as of now. Local authorities have confirmed that the earthquake was mild and that there were no fatalities or serious harm. The quick response from the residents in evacuating buildings helped avoid potential risks.

In addition to the areas mentioned, several surrounding villages including Mannamalai, Kuthiraichandhal, Thavaddipattu, Karadichithur, and Sellampattu also felt the tremors. In these areas too, people left their homes in a state of fear and confusion. The situation was quickly brought under control as there was no lasting impact.

A Disaster Management official explained that there is no specialized research center for seismic activity in Kallakkurichi. "Although this mild earthquake was brief, we have reported the incident to senior officials in Chennai for further investigation. We expect a more detailed analysis after their inquiry," he said.

While the local authorities continue to monitor the situation, there have been no reports of structural damage or casualties. Residents are being advised to remain cautious and stay informed through official updates. Although such tremors are not unusual in certain regions, the mildness of this earthquake has so far not resulted in any significant consequences.

The government has urged the public to stay alert and to report any unusual occurrences to the relevant authorities. A thorough investigation is expected to be conducted soon to understand the full extent of the seismic activity in the region.

We expect a more detailed analysis after their inquiry," he said.
