Sambar onion farming is gaining popularity among the farmers due to its low maintenance and the potential for a good return.

Farmers in Sankarapuram and surrounding villages such as Kalvarayanmala, Palapattu, Arasampattu, Vadapalapattu, Thumbai, and Pacheri in Kallakurichi district have successfully cultivated Sambar onions (small onions) this season. The onions, which require a four-month growth period, have grown well and are now ready for harvest.

Sambar onion farming is gaining popularity among the farmers due to its low maintenance and the potential for a good return. These onions have matured and are being harvested in large quantities, providing the farmers with a substantial yield. Once harvested, the onions are being bought by traders from nearby towns such as Salem, Trichy, Thiruvannamalai, and Vellore.

The traders, who set up camp in Sankarapuram, are purchasing the harvested onions at prices ranging from ₹30 to ₹40 per kilogram. This system ensures that the farmers are paid on the same day as the harvest, allowing them to immediately convert their produce into cash without any delays.

This quick turnaround is helping farmers avoid the financial strain often associated with the long waiting periods before they can sell their crops. The instant cash flow is particularly beneficial as it allows the farmers to reinvest in their future crops or meet immediate financial needs.

The success of this harvest and the trading process has led to an increase in interest around small onion cultivation, which has become a significant source of income for farmers in the region. The farmers are optimistic that this trend will continue to grow and contribute positively to their livelihoods.
