Thirukovilur: The water level in the Thenpennai River has risen significantly due to the continuous rainfall in the catchment areas of the Sathanoor Dam. The dam, located in the Tiruvannamalai district, has a total storage capacity of 7,321 million cubic feet (119 feet). As of 6:00 AM yesterday, the water storage level was 6,657 million cubic feet (116 feet), which is within the safe operational limits.
However, with continuous rainfall in the catchment area, the discharge from the dam has been increased. Initially, the water release was at 5,000 cubic feet per second, which was later increased to 7,500 cubic feet per second. As the water level in the river increased, the water flow at the confluence of the Thenpennai River and the Pambaru stream also surged. By evening, 9,000 cubic feet per second of water was being released from the dam.
Along with the increased discharge from the dam, water flowing from the Pambaru and other nearby streams has caused the river to rise significantly, reaching a flow of up to 20,000 cubic feet per second. This sudden surge in water has caused panic among the people living along the riverbanks.
Residents Warned of Potential Danger:
As the floodwaters surged in the river, local authorities have issued alerts to the people living in low-lying areas near the riverbanks. The rising water level and increased discharge have heightened the risk of flooding, and residents have been advised to move to safer areas. Authorities have deployed emergency rescue teams, and relief efforts are underway in the affected areas.
Ongoing Monitoring:
The situation is being closely monitored by the local administration, and further updates will be provided as needed. People are urged to stay alert and follow safety instructions from the authorities to minimize the risk of harm.
In conclusion, the combination of continuous rainfall and the increased water discharge from the Sathanoor Dam has led to severe flooding in the Thenpennai River, with rising water levels threatening local communities. The authorities are taking swift action to manage the situation and ensure public safety.
