Uttiramerur, a region in Tamil Nadu, is facing significant challenges due to the encroachment of water supply channels that are vital for proper irrigation and flood control. The Marudam Lake water supply channel, which flows through areas like Silampakkam and Karuveppampoondi, has been blocked due to encroachment and improper maintenance. This channel has historically been crucial in draining rainwater from agricultural fields during the monsoon season, especially in areas like Silampakkam and Karuveppampoondi.
Recently, due to the heavy rains that affected the region, water has accumulated in rice fields in Silampakkam, causing significant damage to crops. The channel’s blockage has made it impossible to drain the rainwater, putting the farmers in a dire situation. Farmers, who rely on the timely removal of excess water for proper crop growth, have urged the authorities to restore the channel to its original condition.
According to a statement from an agriculture department official, they are collecting details regarding the damage to the crops due to the standing rainwater. Once the information is gathered, necessary relief measures will be implemented to provide assistance to the affected farmers.
The restoration of the Marudam Lake water supply channel is crucial for the protection of agricultural lands and to prevent further damage to crops in the area. Farmers are hopeful that swift action will be taken to resolve the issue and prevent future disruptions in the water flow system.
