Kanchipuram, known for its fertile agricultural lands, has seen a remarkable improvement in its groundwater levels, thanks to the unusually heavy northeast monsoon rains in the past few months. According to the Water Resources Department, which monitors groundwater levels across Tamil Nadu, the levels have risen by 5.2 feet from October to December 2023.
In October, the groundwater level was recorded at 10.5 feet, but by November, it had increased by 2 feet to 8.5 feet. By December, it further increased by 5.2 feet, bringing the total rise to 5.2 feet from the beginning of October. The current groundwater level stands at 3.3 feet, a significant improvement compared to previous years.
Impact of Northeast Monsoon:
The northeast monsoon rains, which usually occur between October and December, have been stronger this year. These rains have filled up lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, contributing to a higher-than-usual groundwater recharge. This has been a welcome change for Kanchipuram's farmers, who heavily rely on groundwater for irrigation, especially during dry spells.
Benefits for Agriculture:
The rise in groundwater levels means that farmers now have better access to water for their crops. The region, which predominantly grows crops like rice, pulses, and vegetables, has seen improved prospects for the coming seasons. With reservoirs and lakes replenished, farmers are hopeful for a productive harvest, especially after a series of droughts in recent years.
Floods in Local Rivers:
The heavy rains also caused floods in local rivers like the Pallaru and Seyyaru. While floods can sometimes disrupt agricultural activities, this year the floods did not cause significant damage. Instead, they contributed to the increase in groundwater levels by feeding water into underground aquifers. Farmers are relieved that the floods did not affect their crops as severely as in previous years.
Government Support and Future Prospects:
The Tamil Nadu government, along with local authorities, has been actively monitoring water resources and implementing measures to ensure efficient water use for agriculture. The rise in groundwater levels has encouraged the government to continue investing in water conservation projects and to raise awareness about sustainable water use practices among farmers.
