Industrial Wastewater Contamination in Manimangalam Lake: Environmental Concerns Grow
Manimangalam Lake, located in Kanchipuram district, is one of the significant water bodies in the region. Spanning across 2,079 acres and with a depth of 18.60 feet, the lake has been facing significant water pollution over the years. This pollution is primarily caused by industrial wastewater from a factory located on the Padappai-Pushpagiri road, which has been releasing untreated effluents into the lake.
The Impact of Industrial Effluents:
The factory in question is involved in cleaning used alcohol bottles, and its wastewater, which contains harmful chemicals, has been flowing into Manimangalam Lake for several years. This continuous contamination has led to a gradual degradation of the lake’s water quality. The effluents mix with the lake's natural water, leading to severe pollution, which affects both the aquatic life in the lake and the nearby community that relies on it for water.
Environmentalists' Concerns:
Environmental activists have raised strong objections to the ongoing pollution in Manimangalam Lake. They have been calling for immediate intervention to stop the discharge of untreated wastewater into the lake. According to experts, if the contamination continues unchecked, it could result in a permanent loss of the lake’s biodiversity and further affect the surrounding ecosystem, which includes flora and fauna dependent on the lake.
The Role of the Public Works Department:
The lake, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD), has been under increasing scrutiny due to the pollution issue. Local authorities are under pressure to take action to prevent further contamination and restore the lake’s health. The PWD is expected to step in and work with environmental agencies to manage and address the wastewater discharge problem.
Potential Health and Ecological Impacts:
The continuous pollution of Manimangalam Lake poses several risks, including health hazards for nearby residents who depend on the lake for water. The water contamination could also affect agricultural activities, as the surrounding fields often rely on the lake for irrigation. Additionally, the pollution is harming the aquatic species and disrupting the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
