Kancheepuram: The deadline for completing water supply projects under the AMRUT scheme in Walajabad and Uthiramerur municipalities has been extended. Originally slated for completion in September 2024, the works are now expected to conclude by March 2025 due to challenges, including the monsoon rains, that affected the project timelines. The projects, worth Rs. 35.69 crore, are part of a broader initiative to enhance urban infrastructure across various municipalities and panchayats.
The AMRUT scheme, which aims to provide improved water supply, waste management, rainwater harvesting, and green spaces in urban areas, has already seen some progress. In addition to the water supply works, park construction worth Rs. 74.82 lakh has been completed in Uthiramerur, Walajabad, and Sriperumbudur municipalities.
As part of the water supply project, Uthiramerur will see the installation of four water-sucking wells, two water lifting stations, two elevated water tanks, and a total of 80 km of pipeline connections. This segment is allocated Rs. 20.90 crore. Similarly, in Walajabad, the project will include the construction of four suction wells, a water lifting station, and a 47.76 km pipeline, with an allocation of Rs. 14.79 crore.
Officials have stated that once the projects are completed, these municipalities will be able to provide uninterrupted water supply to residents. The extension of the deadline aims to ensure that all works are properly completed and the infrastructure is in place for effective use.
