Kanchipuram, known for its spiritual significance and ancient temples, faces a significant problem during peak holiday seasons. The town, with its temples like the Ekambaranathar Temple, Kamakshi Amman Temple, and Varadaraja Perumal Temple, attracts thousands of devotees from across the country. However, the lack of sufficient infrastructure and security measures in place at these temples has resulted in overcrowding, with devotees struggling to find basic amenities.
Recently, many devotees from out-of-town visiting the Ekambaranathar Temple experienced severe discomfort due to overcrowding inside the temple premises. The lack of temple staff to manage the crowd led to stampedes, and the absence of proper ticket sales for darshan caused further chaos. In addition, the maintenance of public facilities such as washrooms and walkways has been neglected, despite significant funding from the central government.
The temples in Kanchipuram, which are among the oldest and most significant in India, have seen numerous government initiatives like the ‘Heritage’ scheme, which allocated Rs. 20 crore for rainwater drainage, street lighting, and security. However, these funds have not been used effectively, and the infrastructure remains poorly maintained.
Despite efforts to improve accessibility and provide amenities for outstation devotees, the facilities remain underdeveloped. There are also no proper arrangements for battery-operated vehicles to help devotees travel between the temples, and parking congestion around the temples is a persistent problem.
The devotees continue to face difficulties with inadequate facilities, and their pleas for better management, organized queues, and basic services remain unaddressed by the local administration.
Key Issues:
- No adequate battery vehicle facilities between temples.
- Public washrooms and bathing areas are lacking or improperly maintained.
- Auto drivers harass pilgrims by overcharging.
- Unregulated parking around temples leads to traffic congestion.
- Information centers for tourists under the ‘Prasad’ scheme have not been established.
- Wi-Fi services under the 'Heritage' scheme are still not available despite allocated funds.
Kanchipuram, a major pilgrimage hub in Tamil Nadu, faces significant challenges in managing the large influx of devotees during holidays. Poor facilities, overcrowding, and lack of infrastructure are causing discomfort and chaos among pilgrims, despite government schemes aimed at improving the situation. Pilgrims are calling for better management and facilities, including better crowd control, accessible transportation, and adequate amenities.
