Kanchipuram, a city with a sprawling 36-square-kilometer area, is home to 68 parks under the Kanchipuram Municipal Corporation. However, only 15 parks are in a reasonably usable condition, while the remaining 53 parks are in dire need of repair and maintenance. These parks, which are intended to serve as recreational spaces for residents, are mostly neglected and in poor condition. Broken swings, slides, and benches, along with non-functional lighting, have turned these spaces into unusable areas.
Despite the demand for recreational spaces such as boat rides, theme parks, and tourist activities in the city, Kanchipuram lacks these facilities, leaving the parks as the only available options for relaxation. Yet, with many parks in a dilapidated state, residents are left disappointed.
Some parks, like the Anna Centenary Park, see limited usage as their walkways are still passable, but all the play equipment is in poor shape. Moreover, several parks suffer from stagnant water, which leads to mosquito breeding during the monsoon season.
Local residents, including children, the elderly, and patients, are eager to use these parks for leisurely walks, exercise, and recreation. However, the lack of proper upkeep and the growth of bushes and hazardous creatures in the parks discourage usage.
The residents have voiced their concerns about this issue during municipal council meetings, but little progress has been made in addressing it. With no other major recreational activities in the city, the people of Kanchipuram feel disheartened as their only option for leisure remains neglected. Municipal authorities need to take immediate action to restore these parks and provide the much-needed recreational facilities for the residents.
