Heavy rains battered various parts of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas and affecting normal life. The unexpected downpour began in the early morning hours and continued intermittently throughout the day, leading to slow-moving traffic, minor flooding, and disruption in local businesses.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the rains were caused by a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is bringing moisture-laden winds towards the Tamil Nadu coast. Coastal regions, including Ramanathapuram district, under which Rameswaram falls, are expected to witness moderate to heavy rainfall for the next two days.
Residents in many parts of the town reported knee-deep water in residential streets, making movement difficult, especially for the elderly and school-going children. “We haven’t seen this much waterlogging in a long time. Drains are overflowing, and the roads are slippery,” said a local shopkeeper in Rameswaram town.
Local municipal authorities have begun pumping out water from critical junctions and residential areas. Emergency response teams have also been placed on alert to assist with any rain-related emergencies. Electricity supply in some neighborhoods was briefly disrupted but restored within a few hours.
Transport services, including buses and auto-rickshaws, operated at reduced frequency due to submerged roads. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as strong winds and rough seas are expected to prevail along the coastal areas.
Authorities have urged the public to remain indoors unless necessary and follow updates from official sources. Relief and support teams are monitoring the situation closely and will provide assistance if the rains continue.
The district administration is expected to hold a review meeting today to assess the damage and plan further precautionary steps. People are advised to stay updated through local weather bulletins and take necessary precautions.
