In Manamadurai, following a report by Dinamalar, municipal workers swiftly responded to the growing issue of waste being dumped into the Vaigai River. The Vaigai River is a crucial water source for the people of five districts, including Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram, fulfilling both domestic water and agricultural needs. However, the river had been increasingly contaminated by waste being illegally disposed of along its banks, compromising water quality.
After the news appeared in Dinamalar, the municipal commissioner, Arumugham, along with engineer Pattrarajan and sanitation supervisor Palmurugan, led a team of municipal employees to remove the waste scattered in various parts of the river. The authorities emphasized the importance of keeping the river clean and issued stern warnings to local businesses and residents along the riverbanks, urging them not to dump waste into the water.
The district collectors have been taking various measures to prevent contamination of the river's water, and the recent cleanup operation is seen as an immediate response to reduce pollution in the Vaigai River. Local authorities have stressed that any future violations will be strictly dealt with to protect the water quality and the river's ecosystem.
