In Sivaganga, the government has begun the distribution of the Pongal festival package, which includes essential items such as rice, sugar, and sugarcane, to ration cardholders.

In Sivaganga, the government has begun the distribution of the Pongal festival package, which includes essential items such as rice, sugar, and sugarcane, to ration cardholders. As part of this effort, a total of 4.17 lakh sugarcane stalks have been harvested from the agricultural fields in Salur and Melur, and are being transported to ration shops in the district.

The government had announced that each ration cardholder will receive 1 kilogram of rice, sugar, and sugarcane as part of the Pongal package. The distribution of tokens for this package began on January 3 and will continue until January 8, 2025, with households being provided with the tokens for collection. From January 9 to January 13, the package will be distributed directly at the 829 ration shops across the region.

The Public Distribution System (PDS) has started dispatching rice and sugar to these shops through the Consumer Goods Trade Corporation, while sugarcane is being procured from local farmers in Salur, Sivaganga, and Melur in the Madurai district. These sugarcanes will be sent to the ration shops for distribution.

The entire operation is being coordinated by the Cooperation Sub-Registrar Rajendra Prasad and the Deputy Registrar of Public Distribution, Mr. Babu, ensuring smooth logistics and timely delivery for the upcoming Pongal festival celebrations.
