In the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, preparations for Pongal are underway, with traditional "Rekla" race carts being meticulously handcrafted in anticipation of the festival. The Rekla race, a famous event in the Chettinad area, is an essential part of the Pongal celebrations, where farmers honor both their harvest and the cattle that assist them. The carts, known for their lightweight structure, are specifically designed for the Rekla races, which take place between Thai and Vaikasi months.
One of the key artisans involved in this craft is Azagu Soman from Nemaththampatti, who has been actively engaged in the production of these traditional carts. These carts are designed to be single-seater and lightweight, ensuring they are fast during the race. The unique aspect of these Rekla carts is that they are handcrafted with precision and skill. Experienced artisans create the wheels (Arang), which are intricately shaped into circular forms, adding to the cart's performance and aesthetic appeal.
The Rekla carts are crafted from local wood such as Velamaram, Wagai, and Nattu Karuvela wood. Weighing about 80 kilograms, these carts cost between ₹50,000 and ₹60,000, depending on the materials used. A significant part of the Rekla cart is the Kodakkattai, a critical component that needs to be made according to specific guidelines to ensure safety and performance.
Interestingly, some carts feature bearings, although these are considered dangerous and are generally avoided. Skilled drivers are needed to handle these carts with bearings, ensuring safety during the race. While traditional Rekla carts remain popular among enthusiasts, many also use them for decorative purposes in their homes during the festival season.
Despite the growing popularity of the Rekla race and the appreciation for handcrafted carts, there is a noticeable lack of interest from younger generations in continuing the tradition of making these carts. This poses a potential risk to the future of this unique craft, which has been an integral part of Tamil culture and heritage for generations.
