Public health officials have advised residents to take precautions during the rainy season to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.

Theni district in Tamil Nadu witnessed intense rainfall across various regions on Sunday, providing much-needed relief to residents from the scorching heat experienced over the past few weeks. The sudden change in weather brought widespread showers that impacted both urban and rural areas.

Rainfall was recorded in areas including Cumbum, Uthamapalayam, Chinnamanur, Gudalur, and parts of Periyakulam. Showers began early in the morning and continued intermittently throughout the day. According to local weather monitoring stations, the rainfall measured between 30 to 50 millimeters in several locations, marking it as a moderate to heavy spell.

In agricultural zones, especially near the Western Ghats, the rainfall was welcomed by farmers who had been awaiting sufficient water for their fields. Paddy fields, banana plantations, and vegetable crops are expected to benefit from the showers. Local farmers expressed optimism that if the rains continue over the coming days, it could support the beginning of the next sowing season and improve groundwater levels.

However, the continuous rain also caused minor disruptions. Several roads in low-lying areas became waterlogged, and public movement was affected in parts of Uthamapalayam and Gudalur. Traffic slowed down in several towns due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Local authorities have urged people to avoid travel in hilly and forest regions unless necessary. With the district being close to the Western Ghats, there is a possibility of minor landslides or soil erosion in higher altitude areas. Municipal and panchayat workers were deployed in various locations to monitor water flow and clear clogged drainage systems.

Schools and public institutions continued to function, but some schools reported reduced attendance due to the rain. No major damages or accidents have been reported so far, and disaster management teams remain on alert.

Weather experts suggest that this rainfall is due to atmospheric convection activity over the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has predicted that similar weather patterns may continue for the next 24 to 48 hours. Neighboring districts such as Dindigul, Madurai, and Virudhunagar may also receive scattered rain during this period.

Public health officials have advised residents to take precautions during the rainy season to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. People are requested to drink boiled or filtered water and avoid walking through stagnant water to prevent infections.

In summary, while the rains brought a welcome change to Theni district and promise agricultural benefits, authorities have emphasized the need for public caution. Continued monitoring and timely updates from local weather offices are being issued to keep citizens informed and prepared.
