The current frost in the Meghamalai region is severely affecting the daily lives of the local people and has led to a decline in tourist arrivals. This area, located in the Theni district, is an important tourist destination. Many visitors come here to see the lush tea plantations and water reservoirs. Additionally, the clouds that touch the mountain peaks, the traffic on the roads, and the elephants and wild cattle arriving at the dam areas, create a scenic and exciting atmosphere for tourists.
Meghamalai, along with the nearby Moonar, is known for its beautiful blend of nature and daily life, attracting tourists due to its cool climate and verdant environment. However, the lack of rainfall over the past few months has caused frost in this region. The cold weather is now changing the region's usual conditions.
In recent days, the mist has intensified, with fog persisting even around noon. This has made it difficult for vehicles to see clearly, causing significant challenges for drivers. The poor visibility on the roads has posed a serious threat to road traffic.
This frost is also severely affecting the local workers, especially those in the plantations. There have been delays in work and occasional stoppages, causing disruptions and damage to the workers' daily routines.
Furthermore, the water collected in the region is essential for electricity production. The water stored in the reservoirs is used to generate power at the Suruliar Hydro Power Station during both the morning and evening.
If the situation continues, it may severely impact tourism, with the ongoing frost and the resulting isolation.
