In Theni district, authorities are taking steps to prevent the contamination of the Mool Vaigai river with wastewater. Under the leadership of Collector Shajeena, a team of officials, including Rural Development Agency Project Director Abitha Haneef, conducted an inspection at 18 locations. This initiative is part of the Vaigai River water improvement and wastewater treatment project, aimed at ensuring the preservation and protection of the river.
The Mool Vaigai river originates in the hilly regions of the Andipatti taluk and joins the Mullai Periyaru river before flowing into the Vaigai dam. The river serves as a crucial water source for five districts, making it essential to take measures to prevent wastewater contamination. According to a report published in Dinamalar, wastewater pollution in several locations along the Vaigai river has been highlighted, prompting a study to explore ways to prevent it.
Following this, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court issued directions, leading the officials’ team to inspect villages along the riverbank. As a result of these inspections, a plan to set up a wastewater treatment plant worth Rs. 2 crore is being implemented. Key locations identified for this project include Valliparai, Thummakkundu, Varushanadu, Mayiladumparai, Kadamalai Kundu, Govindanagar, Kandamanur, and Ammachiyapuram.
The establishment of this wastewater treatment plant will help improve the quality of water in the Vaigai river by removing excess contaminants, ensuring the protection of water resources. This project will safeguard the water used by the Vaigai dam and contribute to the sustainable use of water for various purposes, benefiting both the environment and the local communities.
