The ongoing issue of sand erosion at Tiruchendur Beach, located near the Subramaniya Swamy Temple, has raised significant concerns for both devotees and local authorities.

The ongoing issue of sand erosion at Tiruchendur Beach, located near the Subramaniya Swamy Temple, has raised significant concerns for both devotees and local authorities. A 7-foot-deep trench has formed along the shoreline, making it increasingly dangerous for devotees who traditionally take a holy dip in the sea before visiting the temple. The Hindu Munnani organization has planned a peaceful protest at the beach on January 17, urging both the central and state governments to take immediate action to address this growing environmental hazard.

The erosion has been exacerbated due to a recent construction of a protective barrier near Amalinagar, which is believed to reduce wave intensity in that area. However, this has led to stronger waves at adjacent spots, resulting in sand erosion and the formation of a deep trench along the beach. This dangerous situation has raised alarms among locals, especially as the number of devotees visiting the temple has increased significantly in recent years.

In addition to the erosion at Tiruchendur, similar sand erosion issues have also been observed in other coastal areas like Kootapuli and Uvari in the Tirunelveli district, and along the Tuticorin coast. The Hindu Munnani has urged that urgent measures be taken to prevent further damage to the shoreline and to ensure the safety of temple visitors.

The protest, organized by the Tuticorin South district chapter of Hindu Munnani, will begin at 4:00 PM on January 17, and the members are expected to peacefully pray at the beach to raise awareness and pressure authorities to take necessary steps.
