Despite challenges such as pest and disease attacks, most crops remained unaffected, leading to good yields in the fields.

Farmers in the Tirupathur region have begun their rice harvest, marking the start of a significant agricultural activity in the area. This year, widespread rains have contributed to a higher water level in fields, resulting in an increase in rice cultivation compared to last year. Despite challenges such as pest and disease attacks, most crops remained unaffected, leading to good yields in the fields. The harvest has been underway for the past few days, with rice fields producing around 1.5 tons per acre.

However, farmers are facing a shortage of labor, which has affected the timely harvesting of crops. While some agricultural workers have been available for planting and cultivation, a shortage of workers is hindering efficient harvesting. It is anticipated that the harvest will pick up significantly after the Pongal festival.

Selvi and Lakshmi from Pariyamaruthipatti highlighted the growing production costs, which are a major concern for farmers. They suggested that if the government fixes the procurement price for rice at ₹2,500 per quintal at the purchase centers, farmers will be able to cover their expenses. Last year, the price for rice in some areas had reached ₹2,800 per quintal.

The rice procurement centers in Tirupathur will begin their operations post-Pongal, and this is expected to assist farmers with the sale of their produce.
