In Tiruppur, the distribution of Pongal gift packages has officially started today in all ration shops across the district. These gift packages, which include one kilogram of rice, one kilogram of sugar, and whole sugarcane, are being provided to 7.99 lakh cardholders in the district as part of the Tamil Nadu government's annual Pongal festival initiative. The distribution aims to mark the upcoming Pongal celebration on the 14th of January.
The distribution list of beneficiaries has already been prepared, with a total of 1,135 ration shops in Tiruppur district. This year, 7,99,180 cardholders will receive the gift package. These include rice cardholders, police cardholders, OAP cardholders, and Sri Lankan Tamil cardholders. The authorities have distributed tokens to the beneficiaries, starting from the 3rd of January, with the token indicating the specific date and time for package collection. The token distribution process was completed yesterday.
For this distribution, 800 tonnes of rice and sugar, and a sufficient quantity of jaggery, have been allocated. These supplies were procured and sent to the ration shops, beginning from yesterday. Beneficiaries are required to visit the ration shops on their designated day, provide their fingerprint at the POS machine, and collect their Pongal gift package.
This initiative by the Tamil Nadu government is part of its ongoing effort to support families during the festive season, especially the low-income families who depend on government supplies for basic essentials.
