In the Pazhaverkadu fishing area, the sea has been turbulent for the past few days, making it impossible for fishermen to navigate their boats. Due to the high waves, most fishermen have been refraining from going out to sea. However, some fishermen, with no alternative for their daily livelihood, have been risking their lives to venture out.
On the morning of the incident, three fishermen from Vairavankuppam village—Ilango (27), Janakiraman (58), and Sundar (29)—decided to fish using a fiber boat. As they were heading into the sea through the Mukthuvaaram channel, a massive wave struck, causing their boat to capsize. The three fishermen were thrown into the sea but managed to swim back to the shore safely.
However, their fishing nets, valued at ₹80,000, were swept away by the strong waves when the boat capsized. In addition, the capsized boat, which was being carried by the waves, collided with the rocks that had been placed near Mukthuvaaram to prevent soil erosion. The boat was severely damaged, breaking into pieces. This resulted in a significant financial loss for the fishermen.
The fishing nets and boat were crucial assets for the fishermen, and the incident has caused them a considerable loss. The authorities, including the Ponnere Meen Valarchi department and the Tiruppalavanam police, are conducting an investigation into the incident to determine the full extent of the damage and assist the affected fishermen.
