Due to the ongoing seasonal rains, all lakes and ponds around the RK Pettai area have filled to their maximum, leading to rivers and streams overflowing. Consequently, water has accumulated in the fields, significantly affecting agricultural lands. Farmers who have planted spinach and vegetables are facing severe losses as water has stagnated in their fields, causing the crops, especially spinach, to rot and spoil.
As a result, the local markets are seeing a sharp reduction in the supply of spinach. Typically, markets in areas like RK Pettai, Pallipattu, and Athimancheripettai receive up to 500 bundles of spinach for sale. However, in recent weeks, only about 50 bundles are being delivered. The price of spinach, which was previously ₹10 per bundle, has now surged to ₹20-30 per bundle due to the reduced supply.
This sudden price hike is putting pressure on both consumers and local vendors, with concerns growing over the continued impact of the rains on the region's agricultural output.
