A new classroom building for the government middle school in Pasiyaavaram village, Palavekadu, was inaugurated yesterday under the Child Welfare Infrastructure Development Scheme, costing ₹32.80 lakhs. The opening ceremony was attended by Thiruvallur MP Sashikanth Senthil, along with Ponneri MLA Duraisandresekhar.
Following the inauguration, MP Sashikanth Senthil conducted an inspection at the Palavekadu Government Hospital. During his visit, he inquired about the treatments being provided to inpatients and discussed the shortage of medical staff with the doctors. He also spoke to the patients in the outpatient department to understand the situation on the ground.
The hospital is currently facing a significant shortage of doctors. Out of four doctors, only two are available on-site, with the others working in different locations. The hospital lacks medical staff during night shifts, and patients visiting the facility are being referred to Ponneri or Chennai hospitals for further treatment. Additionally, patients are being asked to buy medicines from external sources as the hospital does not provide them.
Local fishermen and residents have expressed their frustration with the lack of emergency medical services and called for immediate action to address the shortage of medical personnel. Since Palavekadu serves as a hub for over 50 surrounding villages, the community is demanding the appointment of additional doctors and the enhancement of medical facilities in the region.
