Due to heavy rainfall, the Poondi Reservoir has reached its full capacity, and in order to ensure the safety of the dam, 1,000 cusecs of surplus water has been released. This release of water has raised concerns for the communities residing along the banks of the Kosasthali River, which is now at risk of flooding.

The current inflow to the Poondi Reservoir is 1,290 cusecs, with continuous rains in the catchment area. The release of 1,000 cusecs of water began at midnight on Thursday from the Krishna Puram Dam in Andhra Pradesh, leading to an increase in the water level of the Poondi Reservoir. As a result, the reservoir's water level is expected to reach its full capacity of 35 feet.

In response to this, a flood risk warning has been issued for the villages located along the Kosasthali River. The Department of Water Resources has advised local residents to stay vigilant. The surplus water will be discharged from the Poondi Reservoir into the Kosasthali River at a rate of 1,000 cusecs from 9 AM. Arunmozhil, the Chief Engineer of the Kosasthali River Basin, confirmed the precautionary measures, urging local villagers to stay safe and avoid areas near the riverbank.

The release of water and the rising water levels have prompted the government to monitor the situation closely and take further action if needed to ensure public safety.
