In Tiruthani, located on the way to Periya Street, lies Reddykulam, a water body that holds cultural significance. Every year, during the Pongal festival, special Abhishekam and prayers are performed for Lord Murugan at the temple hall situated near the pond. The water from Reddykulam is used for these religious rituals.
However, the pond has suffered from poor maintenance over the years, leading to the growth of weeds and accumulation of waste. The situation worsened recently after continuous heavy rains over the past month and a half, which caused the pond to fill up with water.
The water in Reddykulam has now become infested with algae, which has resulted in a pungent odor in the area. The stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, leading to an outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases. Residents in the vicinity are facing discomfort due to mosquito bites, with many suffering from fever and related health issues.
In light of these ongoing problems, the residents have urged the Tiruthani Municipality to take swift action to remove the algae from the pond and ensure proper maintenance to prevent such issues in the future. They hope that the authorities will prioritize resolving this matter to improve the health and well-being of the local community.
