Turbulent Damage in Palavakkam Lake Leads to Wasted Water

The lake receives water from both rain and the Surrutappalli dam, which releases water into Tamil Nadu’s lakes.

In Uthukottai, the Latchivakkam Lake, covering an area of over 300 acres, is a vital resource for both agricultural and drinking water. The lake receives water from both rain and the Surrutappalli dam, which releases water into Tamil Nadu’s lakes. The water collected in the lake supports agricultural activities in the surrounding areas like Latchivakkam, Perambur, and nearby farmland.

The importance of this lake extends beyond irrigation: when it fills up, it raises the groundwater levels, benefiting local agriculture and providing ample water for domestic use. However, the lake’s infrastructure has suffered from damage, including three breaches and three collapsed bunds. One of the significant breaches, located along the Uthukottai–Periapalayam road, has been temporarily sealed with sandbags. Unfortunately, despite these measures, water is still leaking through the damaged bund, leading to a considerable waste of precious water.

Local farmers are expressing their concerns and have called upon the authorities from the Water Resources Department to take immediate action to repair the damaged bunds. They urge that the restoration work be prioritized to prevent further water loss and ensure the sustainable use of the lake for future agricultural and drinking water needs.
