Rain lashed several regions of Uttarakhand on Friday, bringing down temperatures and offering relief from the recent warm spell. Visuals from Dehradun showed cloudy skies and consistent rainfall throughout the day. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this is just the beginning of a wet spell that is expected to intensify over the weekend.
The IMD has issued a weather alert for April 12 and 13, predicting heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in various districts including Dehradun, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri, Almora, and Chamoli. The department has categorized the alert under the "Yellow" warning level, urging residents and tourists to stay updated with local advisories.
Officials have cautioned about potential landslides, flash floods, and waterlogging, particularly in hilly and landslide-prone areas. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration have been put on standby to respond to any emergency situations that may arise due to the expected weather changes.
Tourists traveling to the hills have been advised to check weather forecasts and road conditions before beginning their journeys. Local authorities have also been directed to monitor sensitive zones and ensure that all precautionary measures are in place, especially along national highways and vulnerable slopes.
Experts suggest that the rainfall is linked to western disturbances affecting the western Himalayan region, which typically lead to showers during this time of the year. While the precipitation may bring relief from the rising temperatures, it also raises concerns about travel disruptions and agriculture-related impacts.
In Dehradun, residents welcomed the rain but expressed concern over potential traffic disruptions and waterlogging, which are common during such spells. “It’s a relief from the heat, but we hope it doesn’t lead to road blockages like last year,” said Rakesh Joshi, a local shopkeeper.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as needed. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during lightning, and follow instructions issued by the local administration.
This rainfall alert highlights the importance of preparedness and timely communication, particularly in a state like Uttarakhand where unpredictable weather patterns often lead to natural disasters.
