Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has reiterated that the state government will maintain a strict and uncompromising stance on safety measures for helicopter services operating across the state. The statement comes in the wake of increasing air traffic to pilgrimage destinations such as Kedarnath and Badrinath, where helicopter services have become essential due to the challenging terrain and high tourist volume.
Speaking to the media, CM Dhami said that passenger safety is the topmost priority and that all helicopter operators must comply with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) norms and other regulatory requirements without exception. “We cannot allow even the slightest lapse in safety, especially in aerial transport where lives are at risk. All helicopter operators must maintain the highest standards of maintenance, pilot training, and flight operations,” he said.
The Chief Minister’s comments follow a recent review meeting held with state aviation officials, representatives of helicopter service providers, and disaster management authorities. The meeting focused on enhancing safety protocols ahead of the ongoing Char Dham Yatra season, which witnesses a high volume of pilgrim traffic through air routes.
Dhami noted that in previous years, the state had witnessed a few incidents involving helicopter operations, prompting the government to take proactive steps to tighten safety mechanisms. These include frequent audits of aircraft, real-time monitoring of weather conditions, and the establishment of safety compliance checkpoints at helipads.
He also mentioned that the state government is working in coordination with central aviation authorities to ensure smooth and secure aerial operations. “We are committed to providing the best possible facilities to pilgrims and tourists, but this cannot come at the cost of their safety. There is zero tolerance for any negligence,” the Chief Minister stated.
Operators failing to meet mandatory safety criteria may face license suspension or cancellation, he warned. In addition, helipad infrastructure across key locations is being upgraded to meet modern safety requirements, including better navigation aids and emergency response systems.
Uttarakhand, with its hilly terrain and remote pilgrimage sites, sees a significant number of helicopter flights annually. These services are especially vital during natural calamities and medical emergencies, making the enforcement of strict safety measures even more critical.
Local authorities have also been directed to conduct regular inspections of helipads, verify the credentials and certifications of pilots, and ensure passenger load limits are strictly followed.
CM Dhami concluded by urging citizens and pilgrims to also be aware of safety procedures and follow the instructions of aviation personnel while boarding and disembarking helicopters.
The government’s firm stand reflects an effort to balance the demand for rapid transport with the essential need for aviation safety, ensuring that Uttarakhand remains a safe destination for spiritual and nature-bound tourism.
