Meanwhile, health officials are warning about the possible outbreak of waterborne diseases and have recommended that people boil drinking water and maintain hygiene.

Haldwani, Uttarakhand: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Haldwani city in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and inconvenience for residents. The sudden spell of rain, which began early in the morning, continued for several hours, soaking the city and overwhelming the existing drainage system.

Commuters in key areas such as Mangal Padav, Tikonia, and Kusumkhera faced significant challenges due to water accumulation on the roads. The traffic movement slowed down considerably, and two-wheelers were seen wading through ankle-deep water in several parts of the city. Shopkeepers and residents in low-lying colonies also reported water entering their premises.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted light to moderate rainfall for the Nainital district, but the intensity in Haldwani surpassed expectations. The department has since issued a yellow alert for the region, warning of more rainfall in the next 24 to 48 hours. Residents have been advised to stay indoors where possible and avoid areas prone to flash floods and landslides.

Local authorities, including the municipal corporation and disaster response teams, have begun clearing clogged drains and ensuring that emergency helpline numbers are functional. "We are monitoring the situation closely. Drainage lines are being cleaned, and water pumps have been deployed in flooded areas. Citizens are urged to stay updated through official weather bulletins," said a spokesperson for the Haldwani Municipal Corporation.

District administration officials also visited the affected zones to assess the situation. The education department is reviewing conditions in vulnerable areas to decide on potential school closures if heavy rain continues. Meanwhile, health officials are warning about the possible outbreak of waterborne diseases and have recommended that people boil drinking water and maintain hygiene.

This early spell of intense rain signals the unpredictable weather patterns that are becoming increasingly common in Uttarakhand, a region already prone to cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides during the monsoon season. Environmental experts continue to emphasize the need for better urban drainage planning and flood mitigation systems in rapidly growing cities like Haldwani.

The state government has asked the district administration to remain on high alert and ensure that all precautionary measures are in place. With more rain expected, citizens are advised to stay cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and report any emergencies to the helpline numbers issued by local authorities.
