In observance of World No Tobacco Day, the Directorate of Health Services, Jammu and Kashmir, organised a walkathon in Srinagar to spread awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and its adverse effects on health. The event attracted a diverse group of participants, including health officials, students, local residents, and representatives from various community organizations.

The walkathon was held at Dal Lake in Srinagar, drawing the attention of the general public. Organizers distributed pamphlets and educational materials highlighting the risks associated with tobacco consumption, including respiratory diseases, cancer, and cardiovascular problems.

Officials emphasized the critical need to reduce tobacco use in the region to improve public health outcomes. The walkathon was part of a larger campaign aligned with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global initiative to encourage people worldwide to quit tobacco. The event also showcased the government’s ongoing efforts, such as tobacco control programs, cessation support services, and legislative measures aimed at limiting tobacco availability.

Several speakers at the event addressed the crowd, urging citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles and avoid tobacco in all its forms—smoking, chewing, or any other usage. They also highlighted the economic burden of tobacco-related illnesses on families and the healthcare system.

Students from local schools and colleges actively participated, reflecting the growing awareness among the youth regarding the harmful impact of tobacco. Their involvement is seen as crucial in shaping future generations free from tobacco addiction.

The Directorate of Health Services announced plans for further outreach programs, including counseling sessions, workshops, and community engagements to reinforce anti-tobacco messages. They also encouraged families to support their members in quitting tobacco and promote smoke-free environments.

The event concluded with a pledge by participants to lead tobacco-free lives and contribute to a healthier Jammu and Kashmir. The Directorate expressed its commitment to continuing such awareness campaigns and working closely with various stakeholders to curb tobacco use in the region.

World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on May 31, serves as a reminder of the global health risks posed by tobacco and the importance of preventive measures.
