Both chains offer alternative versions, making it easier for every burger lover to find something they’ll enjoy this season.

Fast food rivalries are common in Japan, where major chains often compete with limited-time seasonal offerings. This season, a unique battle is unfolding between McDonald's Japan and the Japanese coffeehouse chain, Komeda. The center of this competition is the croquette burger, with McDonald's serving its Gurakoro and Komeda offering its own version, the Gurakuro.

The two names are similar but differ in pronunciation. While both are portmanteaus of "gratin" and "croquette," McDonald's has registered the "Gurakoro" trademark, and Komeda has taken advantage of the "kuroketto" definition to introduce its version. Both burgers hit the market on November 27th, and burger lovers rushed to try both.

McDonald's Gurakoro (490 yen) is filled with a creamy croquette topped with rich demi-glace and tartar sauces. The tartar sauce has a strong garlic flavor, while the demi-glace adds a sharp spiciness. The combination of creamy and savory elements gives this burger a satisfying taste that McDonald's fans are familiar with.

On the other hand, Komeda's Gurakuro Kaoru Porcini (700-770 yen, depending on location) offers a completely different experience. The burger is filled with a giant, crunchy croquette stuffed with five types of cheese and cream, along with a porcini mushroom sauce that is incredibly aromatic. The mushroom flavor is intense, making it perfect for fans of strong earthy flavors, though those who dislike mushrooms should be cautious. Komeda also offers a mushroom-free Gurakuro with a vegetable-and-potato croquette, catering to those who prefer a lighter option.

Both burgers are delicious, but which one to choose depends on personal preference. McDonald's Gurakoro is ideal for those who enjoy a gooey, creamy croquette, while Komeda's Gurakuro caters to those who prefer a crunchy texture and a bold mushroom flavor. Both chains offer alternative versions, making it easier for every burger lover to find something they’ll enjoy this season.
